My name is Daniel Lopez from Spain, and in October 2023 I visited Bruges. It was the worst day of my life. I built this website so you don't make the same mistake as I did.
Bruges is known to be overcrowded by the massive amount of cruise ships stopping by every day. On average, every day more than 500,000 people visit Bruges, which is more than all Belgian cities combined! Instead of queuing to even enter some streets, try visiting a less crowded city like Ghent or Kortrijk!
The local city government also does everything to make a stay in Bruges as unpleasant as possible, to deter tourists. There are bicycles EVERYWHERE, and they actively try to hit you when you're in the middle of the street.
Stay away from there! The place reeks like waffles and alcohol.
Everyone knows this already, but nearly all the buildings are less than 100 years old and have been purposely built to lure tourists. If you want to see real medieval buildings, you're better off visiting Antwerp.
They ask 50 euros just to enter a church, and on the inside of the church there is nothing to see!
Bruges receives milions of tourists each year, so the prices are as high as the merchants want. It's not uncommon to spend hundreds of euros for a single meal, and drinks are about 180% more expensive than in other parts of the country. Save your money and visit Brussels instead!
My girlfriend and I could not even afford a basic lunch in a restaurant and had to go to a Burger King, where the meat wasn't even cooked.
Due to its proximity to the North sea, Bruges is one of the windiest places in Europe, and every Atlantic storm moves over this part of the country and tends to hang around for days. Especially in months like July and August, it rains almost endlessly.
We were there in October and we went through three umbrella's, for which we had to pay 70 euros each. It was so cold!
The Belgian trains are one of the worst in Europe and are very expensive. It takes multiple hours to even get to Bruges from Brussels and trains are frequently delayed. Trains are generally not well maintained and are to be avoided! You're better off staying in Brussels, or if you really need to take a train, consider taking the Eurostar.
On our train ride we were robbed twice and a homeless man sat next to us begging for money and stinking like piss. Gross!
